Why Not to Ignore Your Blog For Facebook

“Rights to SM2 Blog”

A recent article in Small Business Trends outlines 10 reasons not to ignore your blog for Facebook.  It’s an excellent read and the author makes some great points.  Here are some of our key takeaways:

First and foremost, you don’t own Facebook.  No matter how advanced the social networking site becomes (especially now that they are expanding their “social experience” to sites across the web) if you rely solely on Facebook, you will be SOL should anything happen to the social media giant.  Facebook is all the rage today but will it be tomorrow?  Just as there was a big social movement to join Facebook, there could very well likely be a movement to exit it.  As the article states, “While it’s never smart to put all your eggs in one basket, it’s especially unwise to do it when you don’t even own the basket.”

Your blog, on the other hand, is something you do own.  We’ve talked time and time again about the benefits of blogging and encouraged that your blog should be your anchor in the social media sphere.  The article also highlights some substantial advantages of building your brand through blogging verses being Facebook dependent.

While we are Facebook fans, and recognize the awesome capabilities the site offers for expanding your reach, we advocate that it shouldn’t come at the expense of ignoring your blog. “Use sites like Facebook to build your audience and promote your brand, but your blog should still be the cornerstone of your social activity.”
