Why Not to Ignore Your Blog For Facebook
May 4, 2010
“Rights to SM2 Blog”
A recent article in Small Business Trends outlines 10 reasons not to ignore your blog for Facebook. It’s an excellent read and the author makes some great points. Here are some of our key takeaways:
First and foremost, you don’t own Facebook. No matter how advanced the social networking site becomes (especially now that they are expanding their “social experience” to sites across the web) if you rely solely on Facebook, you will be SOL should anything happen to the social media giant. Facebook is all the rage today but will it be tomorrow? Just as there was a big social movement to join Facebook, there could very well likely be a movement to exit it. As the article states, “While it’s never smart to put all your eggs in one basket, it’s especially unwise to do it when you don’t even own the basket.”
Your blog, on the other hand, is something you do own. We’ve talked time and time again about the benefits of blogging and encouraged that your blog should be your anchor in the social media sphere. The article also highlights some substantial advantages of building your brand through blogging verses being Facebook dependent.
While we are Facebook fans, and recognize the awesome capabilities the site offers for expanding your reach, we advocate that it shouldn’t come at the expense of ignoring your blog. “Use sites like Facebook to build your audience and promote your brand, but your blog should still be the cornerstone of your social activity.”

Google Implements Site-Speed into Search Ranking Algorithms
April 18, 2010
The following was taken directly from Matt Cutts, Principal on the Google Webmaster Blog.
“You may have heard that here at Google we’re obsessed with speed, in our products and on the web. As part of that effort, today we’re including a new signal in our search ranking algorithms: site speed. Site speed reflects how quickly a website responds to web requests.
Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we’ve seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there. But faster sites don’t just improve user experience; recent data shows that improving site speed also reduces operating costs. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings. We use a variety of sources to determine the speed of a site relative to other sites.
If you are a site owner, webmaster or a web author, here are some free tools that you can use to evaluate the speed of your site:
- Page Speed, an open source Firefox/Firebug add-on that evaluates the performance of web pages and gives suggestions for improvement.
- YSlow, a free tool from Yahoo! that suggests ways to improve website speed.
- WebPagetest shows a waterfall view of your pages’ load performance plus an optimization checklist.
- In Webmaster Tools, Labs > Site Performance shows the speed of your website as experienced by users around the world as in the chart below. We’ve also blogged about site performance.
- Many other tools on code.google.com/speed.
While site speed is a new signal, it doesn’t carry as much weight as the relevance of a page. Currently, fewer than 1% of search queries are affected by the site speed signal in our implementation and the signal for site speed only applies for visitors searching in English on Google.com at this point. We launched this change a few weeks back after rigorous testing. If you haven’t seen much change to your site rankings, then this site speed change possibly did not impact your site.
We encourage you to start looking at your site’s speed (the tools above provide a great starting point) — not only to improve your ranking in search engines, but also to improve everyone’s experience on the Internet.”

Hello, Goodbye…Welcome to Technology Marketing
March 22, 2010
With the introduction of Web 2.0, a marketing channel that has introduced blogs and social media, a new formation of marketing has been discovered. Welcome Technology Marketing 2.0. Businesses now have the ability to market themselves through a variety of diverse electronic mediums. There has always been the common myth of not utilizing online marketing because it takes the personal touch out of the process that salesmen speak so strongly of. Now, it is possible to take those missing personal touches and incorporate them into a website.
Through technology marketing 2.0, it is now possible to create a multimedia virtual experience for potential customers. Have the president of the company introduce himself while standing on your website, then let them navigate to product overviews and reviews while accessing online demonstrations. In the world of marketing, technology is now making possible the impossible and bridging the gaps that were once seen as burdens.
Put it this way, with Technology Marketing 2.0, whatever you want your website to do, it can pretty much do. We’re excited to introduce through our Online Marketing and Custom Website Design.
Happy Marketing!
Happy St. Patty’s Day
March 17, 2010
Every time that I think back on the different St. Patty’s Days that have passed by, it seems to always end the same way. Is St. Patrick’s Day not just a random day of the year to give amateurs an opportunity to express themselves through large amounts of alcohol consumption? Not saying that I disagree with celebration. As a proud 1/4, or maybe 1/8, or maybe 2/5 Irishman, it makes me proud to see a heritage that promotes itself so well.
At the conclusion of the work day on this gorgeous March 17th, 2010 in Erie, Pennsylvania, it has occurred to me that although the economy is in a rough place right now, there are still few United States companies doing what is necessary to even slightly penetrate the overseas market. Especially industrial marketing. Their efforts have become so weak at electronically targeting the markets which are so prime for their products, that even ineffective traditional marketing efforts are not even carrying strong appearance.
Industrial marketers listen, and listen good. The traditional marketing avenue is dead. Like it or not. It is time to start preparing the transition of electronic mediums to promote your own growth and gain more market share. I am tired to speaking to industrial companies that feel electronic marketing is not effective in their niche industry. STOP DENYING THE INEVITABLE!
This is the sole reason that our group began conducting complimentary competitive research reports to businesses interested in enhancing a web presence, or, perhaps more importantly, not sure if this channel is right for their industry. You’re going to run yourselves into the group in an ever increasingly electronic economic environment. I suggest you email us for the report.
Happy Marketing & St. Patty’s Day!
